In recent months, both Australia and New Zealand have rolled out new fast-track registration pathways for international medical graduates (IMGs), making it easier for qualified doctors from countries like the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand to practice in these countries. These reforms are part of a wider effort to address healthcare workforce shortages and help more IMGs contribute to vital healthcare services in both nations. Here’s a closer look at what these changes mean for IMGs considering working in Australia or New Zealand.
Australia’s New Fast-Track Specialist Pathway: A Big Step Forward
Australia has launched an exciting new Expedited Specialist Pathway designed to streamline the process for internationally trained specialists—particularly General Practice specialists—wishing to practice in Australia. This new pathway, which opened on October 21, 2024, is part of a broader set of reforms approved by Australia’s health ministers, aimed at increasing the number of specialists in high-demand areas of healthcare.
What Does the New Fast-Track Pathway Entail?
The Expedited Specialist Pathway will allow eligible IMGs, particularly those from the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, to bypass some of the traditional, time-consuming processes of specialist registration. While the program will initially focus on General Practitioners (GPs), Anaesthetics, and Psychiatry, with additional specialties such as Obstetrics and Gynaecology to be added later
Key features of the pathway include:
- Faster Access to the Workforce: The new pathway is designed to remove unnecessary regulatory barriers, speeding up the process of bringing qualified doctors into the Australian healthcare system.
- Prioritised Specialties: The program will initially prioritise GPs, followed by Anaesthetists, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and Psychiatrists, based on workforce shortages.
- Supervision and Education: IMGs entering the pathway will be supervised by an Australian-registered specialist for six months, receive an orientation to the Australian healthcare system, and undergo mandatory cultural safety education.
- Direct Registration: Candidates will apply directly to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for specialist registration, bypassing the need for individual college assessments. However, fellowship in a specialist medical college is not guaranteed under this pathway.
Eligibility for the Expedited Specialist Pathway
To qualify for the pathway, specialists must hold one of the following accepted qualifications:
- Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) (2009 or later) and a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST).
- Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP) (2012 or later).
- Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) (2007 or later) and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) (2007 or later) and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
- Fellowship of the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI) (2012 or later) together with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST).
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) (2007 or later) and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
This pathway is a positive development that we hope will help address Australia’s critical shortage of medical specialists, particularly in general practice and other high-demand fields.

New Zealand’s Fast-Track Registration: A Gateway for IMGs
Across the Tasman, New Zealand is also making it easier for IMGs to start working in the country through a new fast-track registration pathway. Starting November 1, 2024, eligible IMGs from countries like the UK, Ireland, and Australia will have a streamlined process for provisional vocational (specialist) registration.
What Does New Zealand’s Fast-Track Pathway Offer?
The fast-track registration pathway will allow IMGs to apply directly for specialist registration without needing to go through the usual complex and time-consuming processes. It focuses on high-demand medical fields, including:
- Anaesthesia
- Dermatology
- Emergency Medicine
- General Practice
- Internal Medicine
- Pathology (Anatomical)
- Psychiatry
Eligibility Criteria for Fast-Track Registration
To be eligible, IMGs must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an acceptable primary medical degree.
- Have an approved overseas postgraduate medical qualification.
- Intend to practice in one of the approved specialties listed above.
- Have at least 24 months of clinical experience (at 0.5 FTE or more) in the past five years, including at least 12 months within the last 18 months, in a country with a healthcare system comparable to New Zealand’s.
- Secure a job offer in New Zealand.
Once fully completed, applications will be processed in 20 working days, significantly reducing the wait time for doctors looking to start practicing in New Zealand.
Why is This Important?
New Zealand is facing ongoing workforce challenges in the healthcare sector, and the fast-track pathway is designed to help address these shortages by making it easier for qualified specialists to enter the workforce. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in the representation of Māori and Pacific peoples in the medical profession, with 5.1% of doctors identifying as Māori and 2.4% as Pacific peoples.
This new initiative aims to meet the country’s growing healthcare needs, particularly in specialties like emergency medicine, general practice, and psychiatry, which are critical for providing services to underserved communities.
